MoCo Leadership training

Today I attended leadership training with Deb and Diane, run by the fantastic Steve Ferrey from MoCo. I'll describe in a nutshell what we did as 1. I don't want to give the game away for people yet to do this training, and 2. because it was very much about getting us thinking rather than Steve delivering us facts.

It was a fun and interactive session which gave us plenty to think about. The session started off with us identifying leaders (good and bad), including Hitler and the Dalai Lama!

We then talked in groups about the challenges of being a leader, before looking at how to create a team environment that encourages motivation.

Steve used a great analogy for good leadership. Using examples from the Wizard of Oz, he explained that successful teams need:
  • A clear and common goal
  • To know "What's in it for me?"
  • Team members to be recognised for their individual strengths and weaknesses.
We finished the session with a discussion on how important it is for a leader to "Know your Emerald City", i.e. to know the outcome that you are working to, to notice whether the team are successfully working towards this, and to behave flexibly to ensure that the outcome is achieved.

As always with MoCo training, it was a great session, and not a PowerPoint slide in sight!

Any questions - please ask,
Thanks
Amy
